Emerging issue of e-waste in Pakistan: A review of status, research needs and data gaps

The growing issue of e-waste in Pakistan is becoming a critical environmental and public health concern. With rapid technological advancements and increasing consumption of electronic devices, the country faces challenges in managing discarded electronics. E-waste contains hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which, if not properly handled, can lead to serious environmental degradation and health risks. Despite the severity of the problem, there is limited awareness and infrastructure for safe e-waste disposal, creating significant challenges in managing this growing crisis.

To effectively tackle the e-waste issue, there is an urgent need for comprehensive research on the current status, gaps in data, and areas requiring policy intervention. Pakistan needs to develop a sustainable framework that encourages safe disposal practices, formal recycling, and raises public awareness of the dangers associated with improper e-waste management.
